* His attitude was less hostile a few summers later when he thanked another friend for ‘strawberries - the most Excellent fruit’.

* Jessie Conrad claimed to have supplied her husband with the story’s kernel, which rules out its having been written nearly ten years before they met. The story’s interest in ‘jaunty tricks’ is, on the other hand, un-Conradian and appears to have been cut to measure for Tit-Bits; the magazine did offer a ‘Special Prize for Sailors’ in 1886 that may well have attracted Conrad to try his hand at writing.

* Conrad’s recollections, serialised in the English Review from December 1908 to June 1909 under the title ‘Some Reminiscences’, were published in book form in January 1912 in England as Some Reminiscences but in the United States appeared as A Personal Record, a title Conrad adopted for all later printings.
